Contact lenses are medical devices that should be respected. I believe from personal experience that patients do not have proper mandate with contacts. In the past month I have had several patients who obtained contact lenses after their prescription expired over 5 years ago. When asked, the patient responded that they bought in bulk, and when it was expired they purchased contact lenses overseas and even through craigslist. I have also have had patients who switched their brand to another due to cost, and I saw tight fits that caused perilimbal injection due to the lack of movement. I want 3 things to change: 1. Give practitioners more than 8 hours to respond, it is unfair if a doctor or an office is closed that this allows the patient to get contacts that are not correct, expired, or an amount not allowed 2. DO NOT allow patients to get more than a years supply of contacts. Allowing patients to buy in bulk is adding to the problem. I can not get a prescription for birth control and buy 3 years worth so I don't have to go back to the doctor for a new prescription. 3. Make sure that patients also can not change their brand in the future. And also with the expiration date it should be respected.
