The current rule is not being followed by major contact lens retailers at this time. I receive requests for prescriptions after office hours and orders are filled regardless if I send prescription or not. I have also had requests for contact lens brands different from actual prescription given at time of examination. Furthermore, I have had numerous requests for expired prescriptions and the patient still receives whatever supply they desire. The contact lens retailers have no regard for patient's ocular health. These are potential dangers for consumers. Eye maladies due to contact lens retailers "fishing" for prescription sales should be punishable and restitution should be given to these patients. Optometrist's cannot ensure their patient's eye health if retailers are consistently showing via media that patient's can "never run out" of contacts. THEY ARE NOT A COMMODITY but a MEDICAL DEVICE!
