Improper use and abuse of contact lenses can have very significant effects on eye health. I am an eye care provider and I have seen first hand, in only a very short time of being an eye care provider, that contacts can be easily abused and when they are, they cause very serious health concerns. Part of this is due to a perception of the public that the care, handling, and use of contact lens is not a serious thing, they are simply "just for convenience." Which is something eye care providers need to address. But part of the blame also lies with online contact lens retailers who repeatedly try to renew contact lens prescriptions without a valid and active prescription and this further confuses the public about the importance of monitoring eye health during contact lens use. I feel there is a need to more strictly regulate how contact lenses can be purchased so that all contact lens wearers can be properly evaluated and educated on their use.
