The verification process on contact lens prescriptions done by online retailers is not at all effective. Patients have returned to my practice 5 years later, claiming they were able to get new contacts online. Several patients have also come in with incorrect prescriptions and poorly fit contacts because they decided to change their contact lens brand. Our practice stays on top of these verification faxes and phone calls, but if a fax is sent to the wrong number or if a patient gives another doctors info, they can easily say we did not respond and go ahead and verify the prescription. There are too many silly loopholes, putting my patients' vision on the line.
