The process which was designed to protect the consumer is not well designed. Any patient can submit a expired rx to an online retailer and if it is not verified in a short window of time it gets filled. Offices are contacted for verification frequently when the consumer knows that the business is closed. Furthermore a consumer can submit false contact information to an office or make up an office that does not exist, therefore the online retailer will fill a bogus contact lens RX because they did not hear back from an office that doesn't exist, putting the patient at risk for vision problems including vision loss. Passive verification should be eliminated altogether. Mandatory active submission of the contact lens RX needs to be the responsibility of the consumer. It is easy for a consumer to retain their contact lens RX copy and fax it.
