Contact lenses are medical devices and should be treated as such. I have had several patients dispensed the wrong brand or even wrong prescription by online retailers. I also have had many patients able to order contact lenses online after the expiration date (one just yesterday). I'm NOT receiving the required verification from these online companies and in the rare occasion that I do it is after hours or on the weekend. Proper protocol is not occurring and visual safety is at risk. All contact lens prescriptions should have an allowed number of lenses able to be purchased (just like pharmaceuticals) and that prescription should be kept on file by the dispenser. This would help prevent abuse of the system and keep safety a priority. I just want to reiterate that contact lenses are medical devices and are NOT all the same. Safety is my main concern and maintaining long term eye health.
