While the rules are in place regarding third party contact lens sellers, there are no policing efforts or consequences when they violate the rules. Daily, I see patients you have been getting contact lenses online with prescriptions expired years ago. I rarely get a request for contact lens verifications and when I do they are not during business hours. In addition, when I state the Rx is expired I often find it is filled anyway and sometimes already filled before I even reply. Sale of costume contacts by gas stations and such are also troublesome. I've had several patients with red eyes present and have devastating vision loss resulting from these gas station contacts. I have no problem with my patients buying elsewhere. I understand I cannot always compete with box box retailers. However, the current '1-800's' are operating in a way that severely undermines my professional expertise and prescribing at the detriment to the patient. We must have safeguards in place to protect the public and also to punish those who violate the rule/law.
