16 CFR Part 315; Agency Information Collection Activities: Review; Comment Request; Contact Lens Rule: FTC Project No. R511995
Many times each week my office receives faxes requesting prescription verifications from online contact lens sellers. The prescriptions are almost always expired. Most of these faxes arrive after hours and are filled by the time my staff has time to reply. Additionally, I cannot tell you how many patients present to their examination wearing contacts that were prescribed several years prior. They tell me that they have had no problem filling their old prescription online. Most often, they present with dry, red, or irritated eyes due to overwear or poorly fit lenses. This is a serious public health issue affecting one of our precious senses. Who is accountable?
