16 CFR Part 315; Agency Information Collection Activities: Review; Comment Request; Contact Lens Rule: FTC Project No. R511995
We need the contact lens rule but we also need the sellers of contact lenses to follow the rules. No one is enforcing the rules to make sure that online sellers don't sell contacts to people with expired prescriptions. A second problem is that patients forge the doctor's information or put false doctor information so that there is no way to verify the prescription. When there is no way to verify the information, companies fill these false or expired prescriptions with no regards to patient eye health. The system that is in place now is very flawed. Companies send verification faxes in the middle of the night knowing that they will not get a response within 8 hours so that they can fill the prescription. They have been contacting patients a month before their prescription expires to try to sell them more contacts knowing that they are breaking the rules by selling them more than a year supply of contacts. It seems that profit is more important to these companies than health. Without patients coming in for their annual visit they are encouraging patients to be non compliant and risk their eye health. Too many people abuse their contacts and we need to make sure that they do not lose vision. We need this contact lens rule, but there is much room for improvement.
