16 CFR Part 315; Agency Information Collection Activities: Review; Comment Request; Contact Lens Rule: FTC Project No. R511995
I think it is fine that patients receive their prescription to fill contact lenses wherever they choose, however we must treat contacts as the regulated medical device that they are. A patient should not be allowed to order more contacts then the doctor prescribes. Just as in medications if a doctor only gives a year supply of a medication they must see the doctor for follow up care. We hold pharmacies to this standard and contact lens distributers should be held to the same standard. Selling enough contacts to last a teenager 3 years to avoid a doctors visit is ignorant and dangerous. We should only allow one year of contacts at a time for all patients or as prescribed by their doctor.
