1) Passive verification does not work. Patients can fax the request to their own home or email. 2) 1-800 calls all day long during patient care. On purpose. When walmart and 1-800 were together everything was by fax. Now they they are separated they call every 5 minutes...jumping the line of waiting patients. 3) A patient can order 10 years worth of contacts and can't be stopped by the law. 4) A patient can order 1 years worth of contacts from 10 different vendors and can't be stopped by the law. 5) A patient can order the lenses, have them shipped, and when we respond before 8 hours they already have the product. How to fix this. 1) make contacts available by written script only. When have you EVER went to a pharmacy and ordered a years worth antibiotics and the doctor had eight hours to stop you?...answer...never. 2) Offer all offices fax verification...and only fax verification. Use a universal form. 3) Only allow OD's and eyeDO's and eyeMD's to write prescriptions. 4) All contact lens orders MUST have a limited amount of refills. 5) Punish abusers with a warning...then a fine...then take away their business license.
