I've been a Optometrist for almost 20 years. The almost every one of the keratitis (corneal inflammation)patients I see are from contact lens wear. 100% of the corneal ulcer patient I see are from contact lens wear. The vast majority of these cases are from improper lens wear or care. And almost all of these patients with vision threatening problems do not come in for regular exams because they get there contact lenses online without a valid prescription. During the appointment they always admit they knew they should have come in earlier but they just thought they need a stronger power or to try a different lens, so they ordered different ones online (without an Rx or an exam that would have found the problem earlier). Online retailers do not follow the Contact Lens Rule, and patients know if they just put in a fake Doctor name and number the retailer will send the lenses because they will not get a denial. Something has to change so the rules are followed.
