As an optometrist in Portland, OR, I have seen contact lens retailers bend/break the law repeatedly at the detriment of my patients. Examples include: 1. Contact lens retailers changing prescriptions to an inferior product, compromising the health of my patients. 2. Contact lens retailers advising patients to ask their doctor for cheaper/inferior products without any consideration of the health ramifications. 3. I received prescription verification requests right before the prescription expires so the patient can order another years worth of contacts without a medical examination to ensure the health of their eyes. (The contact lens prescription is good for 1 years worth of contact-- not 2!) 4. I received contact lens Rx verification requests at 5 pm on Friday to minimize the time to respond. 5. I have received reports from patients that contacts were ordered but I never received a prescription confirmation form. I have complained to the Oregon Board of Optometry but they told me that I can try to complain to you, but not to expect much. Please increase the regulation to ensure that we protect the health of our patients. Sincerely, Dave Shin Optometric Physician
