We routinely encounter problems with the verification systems of third party contact lens sellers. We have updated our business hours with these retailers many times and still receive Rx verification faxes outside our normal business hours. When this occurs we have NO WAY of correcting the Rx if there is a problem. Also, patients have been able to order lenses with an expired Rx. This is completely unacceptable as this encourages patients to skip annual eye exams. In contact lens wearers especially, annual exams are a MUST. I propose that retailers must contact the prescribing doctor, either by fax or phone, to verify the contact lens Rx AND cannot dispense the contact lenses UNTIL they get verification from the doctor's office. And the request must be made during normal business hours for that office. If a patient has a prescription that is expiring soon, they should be allowed only a small supply of lenses and should be instructed to call the doctor's office for an exam.
