I support my patients right to purchase contacts from any source. My issue is that just like a drug-seeker lying to get more Percocet, the current system allows patients to abuse contact lens wear & I have seen many cases of permanent vision loss as result. Most alarming is that it's often children whose parents are doing it on their behalf. The most common abuses I see: 1. Patient fabricates a contact lens Rx & lists me as the prescribing doctor. I've never seen the patient, so Rx is filled due to lack of response. 2. Patient buys a year (or more) supply of contact lens 1 week prior to the expiration date of their prescription that was already filled at the beginning of their wearing period. 3. I note on a prescription that authorizes only enough contacts to make it to the end of their wearing period. I learn later that they were sold 2 year's worth of contact lenses anyway.
