Contact lens prescriptions are specific for base curve (bc), power, and brand. Consumers should not allow third party seller's to substitute other brands which might perform too strongly/ weakly or fit differently on their eye . Furthermore, there should be a processing time in which to allow prescribers' offices to research the patient record . This processing time should be 24 - 48 hr before filling the assumed prescription . Contact lens prescription expirations vary state to state. In my state of Washington, I think the current 2 yr expiration period is appropriate after which a contact lens evaluations is needed again to ensure the cornea is not suffering any complications even if the patient is unaware of adverse symptoms. All too often, we optometrists see problems arising which can be helped before major infections and flare-ups occurs.
