16 CFR Part 315; Agency Information Collection Activities: Review; Comment Request; Contact Lens Rule: FTC Project No. R511995
I have found that the non eye care based organizations selling contact lenses through various channels rarely respect any boundaries and there is no way to verify what they do. Though doctors are required to provide ex's and are subject to audit and sanctions I would be anxious for resellers to be subject tot he same. AUDIT ! I have numerous patients who have been renewing their rx's beyond reasonable. This past year, an 8 year run of contacts without care. She now is having great care after her corneal transplant with a corneal specialist. (Name available upon official request) The eye care community has been accused of being motivated by profit. Yes, owning a clinic and keeping up with technology, instrumentation, computerization, paying off student loans are all part of the cost of the profession I am committed to and love. I made a commitment to caring for patients them when I graduated and take that commitment seriously. THE ONLY MOTIVATION AMONGST THE RESELLERS IS PROFIT ! There is inherently no patient care component nor could there be. Like many other big enterprises, resellers have chosen to neglect the patient in search of profits and in the process misguided the population by doing as they please. Further they led people to believe, either directly or indirectly that this is an acceptable method of bypassing proper channels of care. I often have patients who chuckle about not having seen me for years because they just "Got-em on line" Why are you here now ? Oh my eyes have been bothering me. I respectfully request the right to care for my patients without the interference of third parties, with only profit motivation, who compromise the care of the patient by creating illegal channels of distribution.
