Dear Sir or Madam: This proposal fails to recognize that many patients do not get their eyeglasses from the prescribing physician/optometrist. The dispensing optician is responsible for measuring interpupillary distance, bifocal height, etc. My suspicion is that this proposal is intended to allow patients to order eyewear online. It is the responsibility of the online optician to obtain such measurements as the interpupillary distance. Consumers will be less protected by this proposal. Opticians will be able to pass off blame for faulty eyeglasses to the doctor who wrote the prescription and vice versa. Please realize this proposal for what it is; an opportunity for untrained entrepreneurs to sell eyewear to unsuspecting consumers. Thank you for considering my comments. Sincerely, Michael J. Azar, M.D.
