16 CFR Part 456 ; Agency Information Collection Activities: Review; Comment Request Ophthalmic Practice Rule (Eyeglass Rule): FTC Project No. R511996
This act would unfairly punish eyecare practicioners who do not have a glasses dispensary in their office. This would force more business to eye doctors who do have optical shops, and creates and anti-competitive effect for eye doctors who want to focus their efforts on medical eye care and not on running a retail business operation in the form of an optical shop. Most ophthalmologists (eye MDs) do not practice in a retail environment, as we focus on medical and surgical eye care. And yet, prescribing glasses is an important part of the service we provide for our patients. If you let this pass, our patients will have to make a separate trip to retail optical shops just to get glasses, incurring further time and money spent to drive the retail business, not to provide better health care.
