The "Sharing" Economy: Issues Facing Platforms, Participants, and Regulators A Federal Trade Commission Workshop
Please find attached some comments on the history of transport innovation and regulation and the lessons it might offer to our current assessment of innovation and the sharing and on-demand economy. the bulk of my comments focus on a history of transport innovation in and around the River Thames in London and the associated legal battles and lobbying. The study focuses on the watermen who used to ply their trade on the Thames before the spread of other forms of land and water transport. The lobbying and legal battles they employed and engaged in have interesting echoes of the current struggles of sharing and on-demand economy players across a number of fields. My comments are entirely personal and are not attributable to any other person or organisation, nor are they an indication of policy or positions of any organisation I currently work for or have done in the past.
