The "Sharing" Economy: Issues Facing Platforms, Participants, and Regulators A Federal Trade Commission Workshop
The "sharing" economy should really be called the "share the scraps" economy. Services like Uber take full time jobs with benefits and turn them into part-time "gigs," driving down wages for everyone. Airbnb has served to take thousands of affordable housing units off the market, enriching the few. Companies relying on the work of people have a responsibility to pay living wages with benefits. The sharing economy is simply a way for large corporations to skirt their responsibilities to workers and communities. The result is a race to the bottom that accelerates inequality and weakens the economy on a whole.
