The "Sharing" Economy: Issues Facing Platforms, Participants, and Regulators A Federal Trade Commission Workshop
To Whom it May Concern: I am part of the sharing economy; I am an Airbnb host and have been since 2012. As a single, semi-retired woman, the extra money generated by my Airbnb guests has helped defray the high costs of living in the San Francisco/Bay Area of California. I have lived in this area since 1982, and although I love traveling, I cannot imagine living anywhere else, and I always look forward to returning home. Airbnb has been an excellent partner in supporting me to become part of the growing sharing economy. They respond promptly and thoroughly to my requests when I need assistance. They offer a very user- friendly website that helps me to make good business decisions and feel safe about the people I "accept" into my space. Living between Yosemite and San Francisco, two of the most popular destinations in California, has made my space a favorite of those visiting California for the first time. Castro Valley is a small, unincorporated area largely inhabited by the working middle class. The guests to my Airbnb space are adding to the health of the local economy. And the guests are often from all corners of the world who really appreciate having the more personal touch of US hospitality that I am able to provide. I trust that you will support the sharing economy. Please feel free to contact me. Sincerely, Cheryl Pierson
