The "Sharing" Economy: Issues Facing Platforms, Participants, and Regulators A Federal Trade Commission Workshop
*** Interested person / consumer WRT the "Workshop to explore issues relating to emerging internet peer-to-peer platforms--often called the "sharing" economy" Airbnb's home sharing community has assisted me, multiple ways. My family learned how to create a safer, more inviting home environment through techniques learned on Airbnb. We took advantage of an Airbnb program that sent safety products to homes (Free of charge to us). As we invite guests to stay with us, we learn what makes them feel comfortable in another place. Child safety has been a top priority. To know our home is equipped with fire/ carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide alarms, has a fire extinguisher available, and our electrical outlets are covered with plastic inserts has met many families concerns for their family vacation. Many visitors have shared tips they do at their homes, helping us raise our living standards. These changes have been shared with our neighbors and they see our place adding value to the community. Many have welcomed our rental property as it needs to be in top shape all the time for anyone showing up. This care of our home has assisted in raising the home values in the neighborhood which has been appreciated in a time when home values are still declining. Many people have had to leave the area to find work elsewhere but were appreciative that they could sell their home instead of loosing it to foreclosure. The other small unforeseen advantage was the business generated by the visitors since we share with them what to see and do in our local area. We have been fortunate that we planned ahead to find how to make additional money during harder times. With this additional money, we have been able to pay $300 monthly to my mother which helps her literally keep a roof over her head. The roof will cost thousands but she'll be able to keep her home. In short Airbnb has assisted us with the finances to live in a safer home, raise our own standard of living, and support the ones we love. I feel more empowered in my community and thanks to Airbnb - I am a business owner. For those that take time to read this - Mahalo, our home is warmly available for you.
