The "Sharing" Economy: Issues Facing Platforms, Participants, and Regulators A Federal Trade Commission Workshop
Being a host for airbnb has enabled us to make improvements to our home, my childhood home & 5 generations have past through our doors. A neighborhood on the edge, this opportunity allows us to bring guests in to our community , a place where they most likely would not stop if they were staying in a hotel. Guests spend in our neighborhood which helps sustain and support our local economy We have hosted guests from 13 different countries and it gives our guest families 3 3 bedrooms and a full kitchen, their own bath instead of trying to cram a family of four into a hotel room with 2 beds. It's giving us an opportunity to meet others that we would not have meet otherwise. Being hosts has helped us meet our monthly bills without the stress since my husband retired. Our guests love being able to sit on the porch or deck and visit with us. We have a yard with a 6 foot privacy fence where the children can run and play , something they couldn't do in a 15 x 15 foot hotel room. A fence we were able to provide because we are hosts as well as all new argon gas storm windows, new garage doors total building has been tuckpointed and saving now for a new roof. All things that have helped contractors in my neighborhood support their business and improve our property. This is our 4th year and when guests review me as a host, their comments make me proud. I'm sure it would make my grandmother and mother proud to not worry how we are doing but to know that all the heritage and history of our home is in print and in a notebook for all who stay to read. We have hosted Missionaries, families traveling Route 66, folks that have stayed here each year and have told friends. This week we are hosting our first Dignitary, who was raised in the area and is bringing his family back for a visit before his next assignment. I have always been a caretaker and I enjoy making guests comfortable and want them to have a positive experience. Vacation dollars are hard to make and I always strive to treat our guests as I would like to be treated. A shared economy is the best for all. Mother always said to share.
