The "Sharing" Economy: Issues Facing Platforms, Participants, and Regulators A Federal Trade Commission Workshop
My Airbnb Story I am a proud Airbnb host for over two years now… proud to share my home and proud to share my city with others from around the world. The experience has far surpassed my expectations. The simple idea, just seemed to be a new take on the old idea that many families opted into to make ends meet and to help one another by taking in others who needed a warm bed and a meal, during sharing time for households during the 1930s depression era. The concept is now reborn, new and improved, into a "sharing economy!" To think that I could share a home that I love and didn't want to leave, struck me as the perfect opportunity to meet folks, create a stay-at-home job for myself with an added income in my retirement to pay the bills and allow me to comfortably make improvements that I dreamed of making! I am so grateful, and a bit honored, to be a part of the "sharing" trend and to experience everyday all the benefits and choices that this endeavor gives to travelers who want to "feel what it is like to live in the area where they vacation!" Both sides, experience the benefits of such an exchange, in ways that were not possible before. Like; more affordable travel expense, greater and more personable interaction with local folks, and, actual live-in "home" accommodations located within neighborhoods. As a former small business owner-operator myself, I realize the importance of customer service and how much business owners value and appreciate other businesses who set a high standard, and master being an example through the process of handling security and privacy between their customers and hosts. I completely respect and cannot say enough good about how expertly Airbnb has orchestrated perfection in this area.
