The "Sharing" Economy: Issues Facing Platforms, Participants, and Regulators A Federal Trade Commission Workshop
To the FTC Workshop, I am writing in regards to my support of AirBnB and to discuss how AirBnB's shared economy business platform has made a HUGE impact on my life and financial well being. I was at a state of living check-to-check before becoming an AirBnB operator. I worked to barely cover my mortgage and bills, I had no extra funds for home improvements, going out or the ability to save for bigger items such as a car. Since becoming an operator of an AirBnB my financial means has changed dramatically. With the income I have earned from AirBnB, I have been able to begin remodeling of my home. My remodeling has included new hardwood floors, 2 bathroom remodels, a room build out, new landscaping, and I have begun saving for a new roof. This new income has also allowed me to have disposable income for dining out and new clothes. This side business has also made a substantial economic impact to my local neighborhood's economy. Guests visit our the local pubs, restaurants, gas stations and grocery stores. This would not occur before as no hotels exist in the area. I have wonderful people through my AirBnB bookings and have great confidence in the identification and security processes of AirBnB. Another very positive impact is the affordability of families to travel with less restrictions and in bigger groups, and also more affordably with AirBnB. Because of this shared economy business I have traveled more myself and have used AirBnB to save on lodging, allowing more money for dining and travel entertainment. Without AirBnB, I would be back to pinching pennies and just getting by. A dismal life and a difficult one when big bill items come along. My car is getting old and my roof is wearing thin. With AirBnB, I feel confident that I can meet those expenses, without it, I will have to chose one or another and scale back in other places. AirBnB has been a savior. This business must be protected. And our rights to use our homes as we wish should be protected. Thank you.
