The "Sharing" Economy: Issues Facing Platforms, Participants, and Regulators A Federal Trade Commission Workshop
Dear Sir or Madam, I just wanted to comment on my experiences with the sharing economy. I host my home through airbnb and it has been a wonderful experience! It has given me a little more financial security in these uncertain times and it has also allowed me to provide work in my community. I provide part time work to people who help clean my home between hosting guests. I use the money I make to maintain the property which also provides contractors and tradesmen with work and I buy material and services locally which also helps stimulate the local economy. I have had wonderful experiences meeting people from all over the world. Last year at this time I hosted a family from Nepal who came to Maine to see their son graduate from Bates College and this week I hosted a family celebrating a graduation from Bowdoin College. These folks as well as many others came to Maine and spent money locally that they probably would not have done if the sharing economy was not allowed to exist. I used to share my home with a roommate but I have had one too many bad experiences to want to share my home long term. The last roommate I had I had to take to small claims court to get paid and he left a piano at my home for over a year until the court system made him remove it. I feel that the vetting process and the reviews of both host and guests has me convinced of the safety and security of this way of sharing my home. The review process keeps both parties honest and has provided positive feedback that has made my home safer and more secure. I pay taxes on the money earned and I also have upgraded my home to make it safer for me, my neighbors and my guests. I also pay for increased coverage in order to rent my home in this manner over and above the coverage provided through the airbnb website. I believe the sharing economy has helped thousands of people become a little more financially secure in these hard economic times and I hope you will follow the queen of England's lead and support the growth of this new concept. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerly, Chris Ferreira
