The "Sharing" Economy: Issues Facing Platforms, Participants, and Regulators A Federal Trade Commission Workshop
Airbnb is the first and only "sharing" product that I have dealt with, and it has been a tremendous boon to me. I fit most definitions of "low income," and have until Airbnb been unable to pay my property taxes and some other bills. I charge the lowest rates in my area at $40 per night, and yet my spare bedroom has been occupied by Airbnb guests for every night since New Years's. Ir has meant I lost my food stamps - I get just $22 instead of the previous $187 - and my property taxes are all paid up. Airbnb made a tremendous difference in my life, and I doubt very much that my accommodation has discomfited any of the similarly-priced motels, which charge as little as $29 a night.
