The "Sharing" Economy: Issues Facing Platforms, Participants, and Regulators A Federal Trade Commission Workshop
While the practice of renting extra rooms in one's home often helps someone who is struggling or who wants extra income, this practice also has a negative impact on legitimate innkeepers registered with their states. These folks pay annual fees, usually are inspected and must have their kitchens inspected if they serve food. All innkeepers, casual or registered, should be required to meet these same guidelines to level the playing field. Otherwise there is inequity in the system and b & b owners/innkeepers incomes can be undermined. Without requiring all lodging owners to register , full time or part timers, there will be a crisis down the road as more people jump on board the 'sharing bandwagon' while people whose income depends on guests, will be impacted.
