Hello, I am writing in support of the sharing economy, specifically Airbnb.com as medium to monetize my apartment. Renting my apartment while I travel for business has allowed me to help offset the costs of utilities and rent. Also, my parents are in ill health, and so it makes it more economically viable for me to visit them more often. Knowing that I can recoup rent by having someone in my apartment when I'm not there allows me to visit them twice as much. Airbnb's trust and safety and messaging tools help hosts get to know the people they choose to share their space with. I feel as tho I am building a community of trusted friends around the globe. I have used Airbnb not only to rent out my own place, but to spend extended time in San Francisco, Portland OR, and Los Angeles, cities that I never would be able to stay in for two weeks at a hotel. Airbnb is an important option for middle class families in America to earn extra money. Guests who stay in Airbnb listings generate sustainable, local economic activity that supports the small businesses in communities across the country. By paying proper taxes into this system, I feel I am supporting our American economy and small businesses in general.
