The "Sharing" Economy: Issues Facing Platforms, Participants, and Regulators A Federal Trade Commission Workshop
My husband and I are both in our 60's and lost much of our savings and retirement security in the 2008 market crash. We have been struggling to make ends meet and have been thankful for the income that we have been able to bring in by renting our home through Airbnb. We are self employed and have had to pay large premiums for health insurance, which is where most of our Airbnb income goes. We have enjoyed the people that have rented our home and because of the reviewing and messaging system are able to check up on and communicate directly with them (and they with us) before renting. We leave recommendations for restaurants and recreation in the area for our guests which feeds the local economy. We have had nothing but positive feedback from our guests and we have had a positive experience with Airbnb. We most likely would not be able to keep our home if we were not able to generate rental income that allows us to stay. The 'Sharing' economy has helped us find a way out of a very scary situation and given us a brighter vision of what our future might be.
