The "Sharing" Economy: Issues Facing Platforms, Participants, and Regulators A Federal Trade Commission Workshop
My wife and I began doing Airbnb about ten months ago. It has been a nice supplement to my teaching salary--especially when I'm getting ready for retirement in 3 to 5 years. We have had nothing but good experiences--meeting people from all over the world without the usual hassles and expense of traveling ourselves. Airbnb has been generous, getting us a photographer for free, paying us sometimes when a guest did not work out (one wanted a place that was "420 friendly"--we didn't know at the time what that meant). We are considering buying a new home. Although I've finally been able to buy a condo on my teacher's salary, it will be the first house either of us have ever owned ourselves. We will only be able to pay for it if we continue to have a steady stream of Airbnb customers. We are hoping the income from Airbnb will be considered in giving us our loan. We have learned a great deal from our guests. My wife started in a face cream business because of a guest, and I have bought mushroom supplements after reading a book on the subject provided me by a guest. We have often provided meals, or gone out to dinner with guests. A good many guests have loved going to Your House, a Thai restaurant that is walking distance from our place. Our next door neighbor at my condo just discovered that we are doing Airbnb (after 10 months). That shows that when you host the guests yourself, it is easier to keep an eye on them and make sure they don't create noise or anything (never yet an issue). The owner of Airbnb gave $10 around the New Year to create friends. I spent over $17 on dog toys, and gave them out at a nearby dog beach. People loved it. We would not trade our experience with Airbnb for anything. We now have friends all over the world, and plan on going to visit some of them some time. We plan on doing Airbnb as long as we can. Please contact us if you would like any more information. We would be happy to talk with you. Spectacular view, cozy Japanese decor
