The "Sharing" Economy: Issues Facing Platforms, Participants, and Regulators A Federal Trade Commission Workshop
To Policy Makers at the Federal Trade Commission: I am writing to advocate for the emerging "Sharing Economy", and in particular the ability to share a home on a short or long-term basis, using a platform such as Airbnb. After being divorced, I became the sole owner of a comfortable suburban home in need of many repairs. Because of the integrity and ease of such a platform, I can now afford to age in place in my family home and cover both my taxes and the endless repairs that surprise me, which I could not otherwise manage. I am provided with appropriate IRS tax documents and any operating questions are quickly solved via email. I am grateful for the Sharing Economy mentors and supporters. I now have the ability to use a financial asset to generate income that helps sustain me, offers an economical service to others and helps maintain stable communities of citizens who care about their homes. Please, let us err on the side of encouraging such micro, home-based cottage industries to flourish rather than being overwhelmed by regulations and restrictions. Thank you!
