Dear FTC, We purchased rental property in the US two years ago. The original tenants stopped paying at the change in ownership and tried to give improper notice to vacate. The second tenant also stopped paying and we had to go to court to evict her. At that point, we switched to using Airbnb to list the rentals, furnished. We are so much happier hosting people who come to visit. We have had no hassles with payments and enjoy meeting people who travel from all over. We were tired of staying in low quality motels ourselves, so we wanted to share our space to give tourists a better experience. We get more revenue and have made upgrades and improvements, hired local tradespeople and make substantial purchases. We maintain the yard the best on the block since we are there regularly. Can't say enough for how good this is. Airbnb has created a venue for us to contribute to the local economy, to make the career alteration necessary due to my husband's injury which has reduced our primary source of income, and to afford an investment that we hope provides for our retirement. Please support this type of entrepreneurial activity that is accessible to those of us who have all our equity tied up in our homes.
