The "Sharing" Economy: Issues Facing Platforms, Participants, and Regulators A Federal Trade Commission Workshop
I have been an adjunct college professor for over 20 years in a town with a very high cost of living. I've raised me son here and after years of saving, bought a house 15 years ago. Last year I began to offer a room in my home for travellers through Airbnb, and this has proven to be a fantastic experience, in every way. I've hosted over 100 visitors, maintained a 5-star rating, and thoroughly enjoyed sharing my local knowledge and the comforts of home with all my guests. What this means for me is not only the satisfaction of providing a great quality and low cost experience for tourists, but also the chance to begin building a tiny bit of funding towards retirement savings. As an adjunct professor, I have never received benefits or retirement, although I teach more than a "full-time" professor does, between several colleges. Airbnb is a godsend and has been extremely valuable for me and my community!
