The "Sharing" Economy: Issues Facing Platforms, Participants, and Regulators A Federal Trade Commission Workshop
Dear Commissioners, Like many first generation immigrants, especially those from China who have made San Francisco our new home, I have immediate family members who live overseas. Unlike those earlier immigrants, we are fortunate that international travel is much more affordable and easier today. As a result, my mother and sister frequently visit me in my San Francisco home. These are important links to me both personally and culturally. I keep a spare bedroom available for them during those visits. These visits are so important to me that I am willing to forgo the financial profits I could gain by letting that bedroom out full time. Home sharing has allowed me to reduce some of the high costs of living in San Francisco while still preserving those precious moments when my family come to visit me. Home sharing has also become an important part of my life, something I value and which gives me joy. Sharing my spare bedroom this way does not reduce the availability of rental stock in my city. My story is not unique. Please preserve our right to share our homes. Yours sincerely, Peter Kwan.
