The "Sharing" Economy: Issues Facing Platforms, Participants, and Regulators A Federal Trade Commission Workshop
As a newly retired single mom of two, I faced the possibility of losing my inherited family home as I only had a fifteen year retirement pension. At 66, the thought of finding another job to supplement that was frightening and depressing. I heard about Airbnb and thought I'd at least give it a try as I had an ideal setup w/private apartment attached. The response and amount of business I've received over last two years has astonished me, and saved me as well. This business has been a godsend in every way. It has allowed me to keep my home, pay insurances, property taxes, yard upkeep, etc. It has also kept me sane...I have a purpose of serving others, I feel connected to the world, not cut off as retired people sometime do. People from around the world come to my little spot, and are so grateful for affordable accommodations that feel like home. This promotes international good will. Their dollars also greatly boost the local economy....EVERYBODY WINS! The Airbnb organization is very supportive, and I feel they have my back. Guest ID is always verified, and they work hard at keeping things proper. The Airbnb team is constantly in touch during reservation activity, and there are emeregency numbers to reach them in case of problems. They are constantly improving their site, communication and procedures. This business is genius, travelers and hosts alike are thrilled to have it available to them. I sometimes feel like I've had a small miracle enter my life. This business has saved me!!
