The "Sharing" Economy: Issues Facing Platforms, Participants, and Regulators A Federal Trade Commission Workshop
I worked in International development for many years. Four years ago I came back to my house in California. Unable to find work, I claimed social security at 65. Two years ago I was told about airbnb. On a Monday I registered with photos of my house. I call it Colorful cottage by the Sea. I am now a full time artist and use my house as my canvas. By Wednesday I had my first guest. During the summer my guest room is full. Last year I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and continued to rent the room in my house throughout my treatment. The guests helped me to change the beds and I benefitted from meeting people from around the world. Airbnb has enabled me to cover medical expenses, repair my car and buy paints to continue my work as an artist. I feel like I operate a guest house, similar to those of the 40s - when people opened their homes to strangers. Airbnb takes all the work of managing the money away from me and allows me to be the perfect host to my guests. I am happy that airbnb exists. It has changed my life and given me a second career. Thank you. Nancy
