The "Sharing" Economy: Issues Facing Platforms, Participants, and Regulators A Federal Trade Commission Workshop
I have been renting a spare room in my house through Airbnb since 2011. This service allows me to make some extra money (between $1000-$4000 a year) by renting out a room that does not get used very often otherwise. This services has given me the opportunity to meet and connect with people from all over the world. We have really enjoyed having interesting people stay with us. I have never felt unsafe having strangers stay with me as I do not accept reservations from anyone that gives me even the slightest concern or hesitation. This extra income has really helped me to maintain my house and do some remodeling/upgrading. This is both good for me and my neighborhood as I am trying to make sure that the value of my house and the neighborhood rises. The extra income has also helped me to make ends meet and pay off some debt. I should also state that this income is reported on my taxes, so it also helps to contribute to the funding of the Federal and State government. This obviously is a benefit to all of society as it helps to support the infrastructure that supports the running of our society.
