As a consumer I love the idea of the "sharing economy" I have used services like Airbnb and Uber. I think they are both fantastic ideas and in most cases ideal for the consumer. I do however see where there are issues.. I have been keeping up in the media with the concerns they bring.. Housing is getting abused by Airbnb in areas like NYC.. I hear stories of people owning locations with the intent of renting them out, which ultimately limits the housing market and drives up prices.. I think maybe there should be a limitation on this.. like one listing per person or something like that.. Uber is a great service.. I have had the pleasure of using it while on vacation.. it was rejected from operating in my hometown recently. This is terrible for our growing economy in Birmingham. Having limited options for safe transportation means that more people will opt to drive home intoxicated.. The fact that i can press a button on my phone (and soon watch) have have a safe ride home after drinking is a game changer and the transportation market in our area deserves to be disrupted. We deserve lower, more reasonable, prices and should have more choice and competition... plain and simple. Limiting competition just doesn't make since.
