Proposed Consent Agreement In the Matter of Service Corporation International and Stewart Enterprises, Inc.; File No. 131-0163
Thank you for listening to our comments and making adjustments to preserve competition in the Jewish funeral home market in the DC/MD region. We are all grateful for your consideration reflected in the proposed consent decree. But making SCI divest itself of the Sagel Funeral home is a change that is not sufficient to reach that goal. Sagel is too small to remain competitive -- it already depends on Danzansky for facilities and chapel services, and if it is divested, a) it will probably not remain an effective competitor in the market, and b) divesting SCI of Sagel does not solve the problem of the contract between Hines Rinaldi and the Jewish Funeral Committee of Greater Washington. Please reconsider and revise the proposed consent decree to require the divestiture of Hines Rinaldi, not Sagel. For those of us dedicated to preserving Jewish funeral practices in the DC/MD area, this is a vital issue in preserving and protecting this most important religious practice in our community. Thank you.
