Media Advisory

Consumers have reported being confused and often misled by the claims made by companies marketing long distance services. New services, including "10-10" numbers and discount calling plans, are heavily promoted in prime-time TV commercials, in national newspaper and magazine campaigns, and through major direct mail promotions. This news conference follows a joint forum held by the two Commissions last November to discuss how these long distance services are advertised and marketed.

What: FCC and FTC will hold a news conference regarding "Truth-in-Advertising" of long distance services.
When: Wednesday, March 1, 9:30am
Where: Federal Communications Commission
445 12th Street, SW, Washington, D.C.
Commission Meeting Room
Who: Robert Pitofsky, Chairman of the FTC
William Kennard, Chairman of the FCC
