CLUed in about FTC’s Criminal Liaison Unit Award

“Thank you for being a friend” – to consumers, that is. We admit it. We’re prone to break out in song a little too enthusiastically, but the recipient of the FTC Criminal Liaison Unit’s Prosecuting Attorney’s Award merits a chorus of congratulations.

The Commission presents the award annually to recognize prosecutors who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to consumer protection in partnership with the FTC. This year’s honoree is the Complex Frauds and Cybercrime Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

The Complex Frauds Unit prosecutes financial fraud and addresses the threat of cybercrime – and they’ve had a long-standing partnership with the FTC to help protect consumers. In just the past year, the Complex Frauds Unit successfully prosecuted dozens of individuals for their participation in mobile cramming, phantom and abusive debt collection, and deceptive payday lending schemes.

The FTC presented the award at a ceremony on October 19th in New York.

It describes the FTC’s close working relationship with federal and state prosecutors – and serves as a reminder that some consumer protection violations can ultimately lead to criminal charges.

Good presentation of information, well done!
Thanks

Perhaps a little late in posting to this but I consider this a very important function of the FTC. For twenty years I have followed the activities of serial mass marketing fraudsters and have seen most of them sanctioned but not prosecuted. The civil fines levied are usually suspended due to their "inability to pay" and they return to the well again and again. I have read hundreds of well done filings by FTC attorneys and am impressed by their passion and skill, as well as by the hard work of their investigators.

THE FTC DESERVES THE AWARD EQUIVALINT OF THE GOVT NOBEL PRIZE... NOT ALL AGENCIES ARE FUNDED AS MUCH AS OTHERS, SOME HAVE ALMOST A "LICENSE" T0 DO ANYTHING INDEFINATELY REMAIN CLASSIFIED OR CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC. {EX: JFK CASE LOCKED FOR 75YRS.} THIS UNFORTUNATELY IS A GROSS ABUSE OF POWER, AND AS LONG AS POWER CORUPTS, GIVING POWER TO MANKIND WILL ALWAYS BE A FACTOR THAT SHOULD BE MONITORED AND KEPT I N CHECK SO GOVT & THE CONSTITUTION ARE COMPLETELY INSYNC. THE US FEDERAL GOVT HAS A STRONG STANDARD SET BY THE FTC, I BELEIVE THEY EVEN BECAME A MORAL LEADER IN THE FEDERAL SECTOR. THANKS FTC!!!!!!!!!!!!!
