Enforceable Codes of Conduct: Protecting Consumers Across Borders

Business has gone global, but how should consumers be protected when transactions cross borders?  The FTC is hosting a forum on Thursday, November 29, 2012, to talk about the role of enforceable industry codes of conduct to protect consumers in cross-border commerce.  What’s on the agenda?  Systems where government entities, businesses, consumer groups, and others develop and administer voluntary procedures that govern areas outside of traditional government oversight.

Just one example of the kind of code participants will talk about:  the new Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) privacy rules that give consumers in that region more consistent protections when their information moves between countries.

Around the table at the November 29th forum will be government officials, academics, industry executives, and consumer groups.  They’ll explore the increasing use of codes in areas like privacy, food and product safety, and corporate social responsibility.  If your company does business internationally, one look at the agenda shows why you’ll want to follow what’s going on.

The forum, which is free and open to the public, will be held at the FTC’s Satellite Building Conference Center, 601 New Jersey Avenue, N.W., in Washington, DC.  Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.
