In place since 1977, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act gives consumers rights in the debt collection process and sets standards for members of the industry.
Back in the day, people in over their heads could expect to hear from debt collectors by mail or landline phone. But as times change, techniques change, too. Debt collection companies now use the full range of tech tools to locate and communicate with consumers — including checking out their social networking sites or using new software platforms. That’s why consumer advocates, industry representatives, and others interested in the state of debt collection should mark their calendars for April 28, 2011. That’s when the FTC will host a free public workshop, Debt Collection 2.0: Protecting Consumers as Technologies Change, to examine how debt collectors are using new technologies and how their 21st century tactics affect consumers.
The event will be held at the FTC’s Satellite Building Conference Center in Washington. If you’d like to throw your hat in the ring as a potential panelist, email email@example.com by March 22nd. You’re also welcomed to file comments on the public record. Although the FTC will accept comments until May 27th, file them by April 7th if you’d like them considered in preparation for the workshop.
