Break out the bubbly and raise a toast: It's National Consumer Protection Week. NCPW is an annual campaign sponsored by the FTC and nearly 30 other federal agencies, consumer groups, and advocacy organizations, in conjunction with state, county, and local government offices that are sponsoring events nationwide. The goal? To encourage consumers to take full advantage of their rights and make better-informed decisions.
So why should businesses be celebrating? Because when consumers make wiser choices in the marketplace, it’s a “win” for them — and a “win” for legitimate companies interested not just in a sale today, but in loyal customers for years to come.
Most companies have had the experience of losing business to a less scrupulous competitor. It would be one thing if just the shady operator took the fall-out. But once bitten, consumers are often twice shy about making a purchase. Consumers who know their rights and have the tools they need to research products and providers are more likely to spurn the corner-cutters and do business with companies who will give them a fair shake.
That’s why entrepreneurs in it for the long haul should join in the festivities this week. This year’s theme — Your Information Destination: NCPW.gov — gives you plenty of opportunities to spread the word to your colleagues and customers. This week’s blog posts will offer suggestions on how you can celebrate. For starters:
1) Link to NCPW.gov on your homepage.
2) Find out about events planned in your area and drop by, tune in, or surf over.
3) Send an email to your employees — especially those on the customer service side of the business — to remind them of the critical role they play as the face of your company to prospective customers.
4) Mention National Consumer Protection Week on your company’s social networking pages — and your own.
