FTC sends full refunds to people who were charged for fake debt
The FTC and the Office of the Illinois Attorney General are sending payments totaling more than $4 million to 10,865 people who lost money to a phantom debt collection scheme. The debt collectors used names such as Stark Law, Stark Recovery, Capital Harris Miller, and CHM Capital Group.
According to the FTC and the Illinois Attorney General, the debt collectors targeted people who had applied for payday or short-term loans and pressured them into paying fake debts by threatening to sue or arrest them if they did not pay.
