As part of its continuing efforts to curb illegal debt collection practices, the FTC has reached a settlement with Rumson, Bolling, and Associates. The settlement resolves FTC allegations that three debt collection companies subjected people to abusive debt collection practices and deceived small business clients. Under the settlement, defendants are barred from the debt collection business and will pay $700,000. Among other things, the FTC's complaint alleged that the defendants berated people with obscene and profane language, threatened them with physical harm, improperly disclosed their debts to their employers, co-workers, neighbors, and other third parties, and falsely threatened people with lawsuits, arrest, seizure of their property, or wage garnishment. Several people reported that the defendants even threatened to dig up the bodies of deceased relatives for alleged non-payment of funeral bills.
