FTC and State of Ohio Sending Refund Checks to Tech Support Scam Victims
The FTC, along with its co-plaintiff, the State of Ohio, is sending refund checks totaling more than $92,000 to victims of an alleged tech support scam. The defendants used a variety of names including Repair All PC, Pro PC Repair, I Fix PC, WebTech World, Online Assist, Datadeck, and Techers247.
According to the complaint, the defendants used ads designed to look like pop-up security alerts and pretended to be associated with major technology companies to trick people into giving them remote access to their computers. After gaining access, the defendants allegedly ran sham diagnostic tests and told people that their computers were infected with viruses or had been hacked. They then urged people to buy unnecessary tech repair services costing hundreds of dollars.
If you get a check, please cash it within 60 days.
