FTC RETURNS MONEY TO PEOPLE HARMED BY PHANTOM DEBT COLLECTOR

The FTC is sending 1,432 checks totaling $772,512 to people who were targeted by an abusive debt collector for debts that they did not owe.

The FTC and the New York Attorney General sued Hylan Asset Management and related defendants for operating an abusive debt collection scheme, and the defendants agreed to settle. According to the lawsuit, Hylan sold fake debts to several collection agencies, including Worldwide Processing Group, who then used abusive and illegal practices to collect. Hylan continued to buy and sell debt to third parties even though it was repeatedly notified that people did not owe many of the debts, the FTC alleged.
